End Well to Begin Well: Using Project Retrospectives for Refreshment
and Renewal
Tuesday, September 18, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Ellen
Gottesdiener, Principal Consultant, EGB Consulting
Project retrospectives—also known as postpartums, postmortems, team
reviews, debriefs, lessons learned and afteraction reviews—are typically
held at the end of a project, an increment or a major milestone. Retrospectives
give teams and stakeholders a chance to reflect and tap into their most profound
insights. In a retrospective, team members get out the project story, harvest
collective wisdom, tell the truth without blame or judgment, identify what
to appreciate and improve, understand and forgive their failings, and relish
their successes. Teams use the insights gained from retrospectives to improve
their processes in new projects. Let’s share our retrospective experiences,
or come to learn from your colleagues if retrospectives are new to you. We
can discuss such topics as structuring and timing for retrospectives (both
“agile” or interim as well as end-of-project retros), how to “sell”
this process to management, establishing safety, activities that work (or
don’t!), and more. For more information about retrospectives, visit
www.retrospectives.com.

Managing Change in an Almost Agile Environment
Tuesday, September 18, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Steve
Berczuk, Sr. Software Engineer, Fast Search and Transfer
One common impediment to teams trying to be agile is managing change. Agile
methods require techniques for ensuring feedback that the team is building
something that matches the stakeholders’ vision and that the stakeholders
understand the risks of introducing change mid-iteration. In this discussion,
participants will learn how to apply techniques such as user stories and unit
tests, and provide feedback and better manage change regardless of the agile
approach your team is using (or attempting to use). Participants are invited
to bring questions relevant to their own situations to guide the discussion
and better learn from each other.
Update on the Unified Process: Something Old, Something New, Something
Borrowed and Definitely Something Blue
Tuesday, September 18, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Scott
Ambler, Practice Leader, Agile Development, IBM
The Unified Process (UP) framework, and in particular the Rational Unified Process
(RUP), was publicly released in 1996. Since then the UP has evolved in several
directions, new players have entered the field, and the UP has been adopted
by thousands of organizations worldwide. At this BoF, let's discuss how we're
applying and following the UP in practice: Has your organization adopted the
Open Unified Process (OpenUP) or the Eclipse Process Framework (EPF) Composer,
two open source offerings? The Agile Unified Process (AUP)? Aspects of the Enterprise
Unified Process (EUP) or perhaps the Essential Unified Process (EssUP)?
SD Investment Club
Wednesday, September 19, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Christian Gross, Trainer/Mentor
Ok, so you are probably in the market and looking for the hot tip. Well
this BOF is not about hot tips. This BOF is about investment strategies.
As this is the first BOF of the SD Investment Club the focus will be on
explaining what the keywords Options, the Greeks, Arbitrage,
Delta-Neutral, and Technical Analysis represent. Covered topics will be on why the market is or is not efficient, trend trading, and why you should never ever predict where the market is
going. And of course all of this will be covered in the context of
trading systems (eg Trade Station, or Trader Workstation).
What’s Keeping Agile Development from Mainstream Adoption?
Wednesday, September 19, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Damon Poole, Founder and CTO, AccuRev Inc.
Agile is generally talked about as a single package: if you adhere to the principles,
you get the benefits. Without a clear mapping of principles to practices to
benefits it is difficult for Agile to spread rapidly. Complicating this is the
perception that Agile is for small teams and requires the use of 3x5 cards,
co-location and pair programming. Topics will focus on what it takes for mainstream
adoption of Agile; include the relationship between principles, practices and
benefits; and scaleable Agile practices.
Damon Poole is founder and CTO of AccuRev
Inc., a leading provider of Agile Development tools. Damon has been involved
in software development methodology and process improvement projects for over
fifteen years at the Open Software Foundation, Fidelity Investments, and many
others. Damon writes frequently on the topic of Agile development and works
closely with AccuRev’s customers developing and implementing state-of-the-art
Agile techniques. Damon earned his BS in Computer Science at the University
of Vermont in 1987. You can contact Damon at damon@accurev.com. His Agile Software
